Finally… I am writing my blog again! It’s been a long long time ago that I wrote on this blog. Well, lots of things happened during my absence. There were my ups and downs on romance, education, career, friendship, and family. There was a time when I felt quarter-life crisis. And there was the time when I felt that I could climb all the mountains of life in this world. In short, lots and lots of things happened and stupidly, I didn’t write that so I could barely remember those feelings now.

Today is already October, and I haven’t succeed any of my resolutions this year. I guess time goes as fast as bullet train, once you’ve missed the train, there’s no other way you could be on time.

These photographs were taken when I was attending the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) 2009 at Harvard university on March 2009. After attending the conference, I still had few days left and I decided to go around Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) and you guys could see some of the pictures I could get there. I actually sneaked into one of those classess, but I couldn’t take any picture inside because my camera would’t work without flash (and it’s impossible to take a photograph without making a scene) so I didn’t take any picture while I was in the class at MIT.

Does anyone know how to apply for a scholarship at MIT? please tell me… I desperately need it..

Mungkin kita semua pernah menghadiri job fair atau pameran beasiswa, dimana terdapat booth untuk bertanya dan juga presentasi dari masing-masing perusahaan tentang visi misi mereka. Coba sekarang bayangkan ada ‘idea fair’, yaitu pameran ide-ide, dimana berbagai macam orang yang memiliki ide yang brilian dan telah mempengaruhi komunitas orang presentasi dan presentasi ide-ide tersebut dilakukan di depan pengusaha, investor, para tokoh intelektual bahkan sampai orang awam, dan terlebih lagi, disebarkan ke seluruh dunia. Ketimpangan ide intelektual antara Negara maju dan Negara berkembang pasti akan berkurang dan yang pasti, kehidupan umat manusia pasti akan lebih baik oleh karena implementasi-implementasi ide tersebut. Sebut saja Tim Berners-Lee si bapak internet, Al Gore bercerita tentang global warming, dan Elisabeth Gilbert memaparkan perjalanannya dalam membuat buku bestsellernya “Eat Pray Love’. Mereka semua disatukan dalam satu acara yang bernama TED Talks.

TED yang berarti Technology Entertainment and Design ini pertama kali dilaksanakan tahun 1984 kemudian diresmikan oleh Chris Anderson, CEO dari majalah avant-garde, Wired Magazine. Misi utamanya adalah menyebarkan ide brilian yang tercermin dalam slogannya, TED: Ideas Worth Spreading, kita dapat menyaksikan pameran ide atau ‘idea fair’ ini melalui Ted.com tanpa mengeluarkan uang sepeser pun.

Mungkin jenis pekerjaan yang paling ajaib di Silicon Valley tahun ini adalah ‘Facebook Porn Patrol’, alias orang-orang yang pekerjaannya melihat-lihat profil-profil yang tidak senonoh. Penghasilan Facebook Porn Patrol atau biasa diplesetkan menjadi “The Nipple Patrol” ini tidak main-main, bisa mencapai US$50,000 setahun. Jumlah yang luar biasa untuk pekerjaan semacam itu. Mengapa Mark Zuckerberg sampai membuat tim khusus yang pekerjaannya main-main seperti itu? Jawabannya mungkin tidak ‘semain-main’ itu.

Seperti yang sudah kita ketahui, Facebook adalah situs jejaring social yang pertumbuhannya terpesat dibandingkan situs-situs jejariang social yang lain seperti myspace dan friendster. Sebagai situs jejaring social yang terbesar, jasa mereka sering dipergunakan untuk melakukan control social dan berbagai control atas pelanggaran hukum, seperti pemantauan “underage drinking’ atau anak-anak dibawah umur yang mengkonsumsi alcohol oleh para polisi. Dari awalnya hanya memantau dealer narkoba, kini polisi pun juga memakai facebook untuk mencari informasi tentang pembunuhan, narkoba, penculikan, dan lain-lain. Bahkan facebook dapat dipakai untuk men-track pasangan anak-anak yang  kabur dari rumah sejauh 3 negara bagian, karena pasangan tersebut tidak tahan untuk tidak membuka facebook selama perjalanannya tersebut.

Menjadi sumber informasi demi kepentingan bersama kini menjadi salah satu fungsi Facebook, oleh karena itu, salah satu tugas dari Facebook Porn Patrol adalah mengkampanyekan penggunaan profil facebook dengan nama asli. Mereka mulai mensortir dan memperingatkan, bahkan menghilangkan profil pengguna facebook dengan nama palsu, sepert “Batman” atau yang lainnya. Selain profile-profile facebook yang tidak senonoh dan dengan nama palsu, mereka juga menyortir iklan-iklan yang tidak sesuai dengan brand image facebook, yaitu ‘berkelas’. Seperti yang diungkap oleh Psikolog dari Stanford yang mengajar tentang service, “From a branding perspective, Facebook is the high-status, trusted brand in the social networking space,” BJ Fogg.

Oleh karena itu, dibentuknya tim Facebook Porn Patrol yang terdengar sedikit lucu tersebut, ternyata ada sebab dan tujuan yang kuat dan tidak main-main sama sekali.

My favourite band, The Beatles, has been one of the most influential band in the world since 1960s. They have influenced popular culture, and being the popular culture icon itself. There are thosands of  books published under the name of The Band. And now, why we are not studying the band? That’s the reason why the Liverpool Hope University arranged Master program, “The Beatles, Popular Music, and Society”. Mike Brocken, the administrator of the program said, “There have been over 8,000 books about the Beatles but there has never been serious academic study and that is what we are going to address,”.

Wow, I am wondering how big this band would be…
