Do more, read less
My praise to all HR expert in the world. I have been involved in a project and developed proposal to assist client’s problem in HR aspects of their companies, but HR is still an abstract concept for me. Regardless of how good my managers are or even how stupid I am, most of the times the owners of the companies address their problem in inaccurately. Because not many of them are familiar with HR issues, so they told us the story which has no relevancies with something that they really need. Furthermore, most of the times the preliminary judgment of theirs are biased. Since it is a human factor related problem, of course we are all cannot be one hundred percent be neutral. Their personal experience made them think like that. And it is not wrong.
I, personally, want to be expert in this field. I had developed my own learning plan and resulted in nothing. Why? My learning plan was to read all sources about HR from my companies’s knowledge repository or textbooks. At first I thought there’s nothing wrong with it, as i was doing all this when i was a student long time ago. However, it turned out that it is inefficient way of learning if you are really working in a company and need a day-to-day analysis and problem solving ability. So I changed my style of learning into a more practical way (in my opinion).
I started to use some problem solving tools such as 5w 1h tools. What, why, when, where, and how have helped me in “tuning” more quickly if I have a situation with client. Exercising your mind with that kind of tools is giving you more added value in understanding client’s problem. The tools such as problem sovling tools, or BCG matrix or the other tools can actually exercise your mind rather than reading a thick textbook. Considering time limitation, this way of learning is much more efficient although not actually really effective in understanding the subject. Well, there’s always a price to pay anyway. I am not throwing away my textbooks, but I read it whenever I need reference. But my main priority is to do more, exercise more, andread less (but still reading).
